ARE YOU READY FOR A SHORT CUT? by WES HESTON

March 1, 2017

When I have a guest in my chair say “I’m thinking about going short,” my mind immediately fills with ideas of what I want to do and… I LOVE IT! Following that statement, however, there’s usually a, “but, I don’t know if it will look good on me.” As much as I love short hair, and believe that most people can wear some form of a short style well, there are some things to keep in mind if you’re debating on making the cut.

FACE & HEAD SHAPE MATTERS

When cutting your hair short, you want to keep your face shape in mind. I truly believe that your face shape doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go short—it just depends on how short. To flatter your features, a short cut should help you achieve the look of an oval face shape. For example, if you have a round face, you will want layers throughout, so you can add some height and make the face appear slimmer. If you have a heart-shaped face, maybe think about adding some longer bangs to disguise a wider forehead. These are just a couple of examples, so it is extremely important that your stylist feels comfortable cutting short hair.

SHORT HAIR DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN YOU HAVE “WASH AND GO” HAIR
One of the most common myths I hear is that short hair can be “wash and go.” Unfortunately, this isn’t always the reality. Short hair requires salon professional products. Whether you are going for a classic, sleek pixie or a fun, spiky cut, you will need good products to add texture and accentuate the style. Aveda has many to choose from depending on your hairs needs.

HAVING WAVY HAIR DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN’T GO SHORT
Yes, you do need consider your hair’s texture, but there are many short cuts that will work for wavy hair. One thing to keep in mind: your waves will probably be enhanced when removing weight from them, so leaning on the longer side of short would help work with what’s naturally there.

GROWING IT OUT WILL NOT BE HORRIBLE, OKAY?
When you decide that it is time for you and your short hair to part ways, don’t worry! I’ve found that a lot of my guests find some “in between” cuts that they love, and even stick with. You will find that the growing out stage isn’t bad at all, and it’s a great way to try new styles that you may not have even considered.

YES—SHORT HAIR IS FEMININE
I often hear concerns about whether or not short cuts can appear feminine. Of course they can! Nothing shows off a great pair of earrings or a pair of red lips like an amazing short cut. And, in my opinion, if you are pulling your hair in a pony tail everyday, a fun, sassy short cut is way more feminine.

I’M NOT SAYING SHORT HAIR IS FOR EVERYONE, BUT I DON’T THINK IT IS SOMETHING TO BE SCARED OF. IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING A NEW DO THAT REQUIRES THE LOSS OF SOME LENGTH, THESE ARE JUST A FEW THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND. ALWAYS SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION FOR A SHORT CUT FIRST AND COME PREPARED WITH SOME PICTURES AND QUESTIONS FOR YOUR STYLIST. HAVE FUN CHOOSING YOUR SHORT CUT!
